Yours truly

Willkommen!

“This 3-star spa hotel enjoys a central and tranquil location of the spa town of Braunlage, in Lower Saxony, in the popular Harz Mountains. The Kurhotel Rögener is an ideal base for hiking tours and day trips in the scenic surroundings. Come here to escape the stresses and strains of modern life. Let yourself be pampered and attend to your well-being here in the hotel. The hotel spa area features an indoor swimming pool and a sauna. A wide range of massages are available. You can also relax in the Kurhotel Rögener over a game a pool, or on the spacious garden terrace.” (LetsBookHotel.com, October 2020)

Judging from photos and reviews the hotel was a living 70s relic until badly struck by a fire in February 2009. The damaged part was eventually demolished in 2017 while the more intact section was renovated.

The One Star Experience

A visitor's review at HolidayCheck.de after a stay with the family from October 2006 tells a grim tale. And yes, this was from before the fire.

Hotel allgemein

“There was mold in the bathroom, the solarium belongs in a museum and still cost 5 Deutsch Mark (note: the Mark was replaced by the Euro in 2002) and the information was last updated around 1970. It was a trip to the 70s but not justified by the prices. Not handicapped accessible at all since with a normal wheelchair you can't even go through the hallway or in to the elevator, which still has a manual door!”

Zimmer

“In a very dire need of renovation, moldy, the wallpaper comes off the wall, the minibar is something from the 70s, the sockets are hanging loosely from the wall, the TV was in color but also older than 15 years, the towel (hangers) are falling down on their own, the toilet brush has apparently never been changed or ever cleaned.”

Service

“Unfriendly reception. If you arrived 60 minutes before the end of breakfast you only get what is there, no more bread or juice filled up, if it's gone it's gone! The tables are separated and even if there was space available you're not asked where you want to sit! The room cleaning was very poor and our shower was moldy, the toilet brush was no longer white but brown, that's all I want to say because it makes you feel sick! The beds were made so that the duvets did not reach the pillows. The swimming pool was strongly chlorinated, the shower in the pool area has been neglected and the floor covered with orange colored bacteria or fungi and the walls of the changing rooms, in a beautiful 70s orange, held up if you were careful with them. There is a toilet by the swimming pool but you had to bring a candle because there was no light and no window.”

Sport, Pool & Unterhaltung

“Internet, what is that? Does not exist! Wellness not included for the swimming pool, the training room and the solarium which are from the 70s! The solarium was a wooden table and the upper part lowered from the ceiling. I have never seen anything like it. The training equipment consisted only of an excercise bike from the 70s, which was also broken. The swimming pool was very cold and very strongly chlorinated! And in the entire wet area there were more fungi than people.”

Lage & Umgebung

“It is very close to the city center and the cable car, so ideal conditions for making excursions without a car. The parking spaces at the hotel are very limited.”
